The Hurst Wildfire began around 10:30 pm on January 7 in Los Angeles County. The fire began burning somewhere near Diamond Road in Sylmar and continued to spread rapidly. As of January 13, the latest update from CalFire stated that the fire had burned nearly 800 acres and is 97% contained.

The fire’s quick spread was attributed to the dry landscape conditions, low humidity, and high winds. Fire crews worked tirelessly through the extremely challenging conditions to contain the fire and protect the communities it threatened.

On January 8th a CalFire update stated that firefighters successfully established control lines and were able to handle a few flare-ups within the planned containment area perimeter. They worked overnight to strengthen the containment lines and by the morning of January 9th, they had successfully contained the fire north of the I-210 Foothill Freeway, establishing control lines that extended to the Santa Clara Divide Road.

While crews continued to work to get the fire under control officials investigated what initially caused the fire to spark.

Affected areas were placed under evacuation mandates, including:

  • The area north of the 210 Freeway from Roxford to the I 5/14 split
  • LAC-E132-A
  • LAC-E132-B
  • LOS-E001
  • SCL-CALGROVE
  • SCL-ETERNAL
  • SCL-NEWHALLPASS
  • SCL-WILDWOOD
  • LAC-E119-B
  • LAC-E132-A
  • LAC-E132-B
  • LOS-E001

Who Can Be Held Accountable For Wildfire Victims’ Losses?

Determining liability for wild-fire related losses depends on the circumstances surrounding the fire’s origin and spread. While homeowners’ insurance policies may cover some of the damages experienced, they often do not cover the full extent.

In the case of the Hurst wildfire in Los Angeles County, potential parties that could be held accountable may include:

  • Power companies – electrical utility companies are frequently investigated when wildfires start near power lines or electrical equipment. Faulty equipment, poor maintenance, or inadequate vegetation management can lead to sparks or downed lines that can ignite fires.
  • Water companies – In some cases, water providers may face scrutiny if a lack of adequate water supply hinders firefighting efforts, contributing to the spread and severity of the fire.
  • Homeowners – while typically less common, homeowners may be held responsible if their negligence, such as leaving an open flame or burning debris during restricted periods, directly causes a wildfire.
  • Arsonists – if investigators determine that the wildfire was intentionally started, the individual(s) responsible for committing arson can be held criminally and civilly liable for the losses suffered by victims
