Every year, hundreds of music festivals take place across the United States, drawing in excited concertgoers from around the country. Unfortunately, many factors can make these musical events dangerous for attendees. For example, many festivals take place in the summer, where extreme temperatures can exacerbate drug effects such as dehydration. Many attendees are also very young, which can lead to poor choices involving drugs. Others, still, are extreme outliers, such as the Route 91 Harvest shooting, which was the sole fault of the shooter. In cases where the festival organizer failed to protect attendees or get them adequate medical care, wrongful death lawsuits have been filed.
Keep reading to learn all about these tragic incidents, the lives lost, and ultimately who was responsible. The data below was sourced from news articles.

One outlier in the data is the Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in 2017. It was the deadliest mass shooting in American history, resulting in 60 fatalities and over 800 injuries. In just ten minutes, the gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. He fired more than 1,000 rounds and then took his own life before law enforcement could apprehend him.
The Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas shooting prompted a renewed national dialogue on gun control legislation, leading to calls for stricter firearm regulations and measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. It also spurred initiatives to improve mental health support services and emergency response procedures, emphasizing the importance of addressing the root causes of violence and promoting community safety.

A fatal incident occurred at the Astroworld festival on November 5, 2021, in Houston, Texas. During rapper Travis Scott’s performance, a crowd surge caused chaos, resulting in multiple injuries and the deaths of ten concertgoers, ranging in age from 9 to 27. According to reports, attendees were crushed against barriers and each other as the crowd surged toward the stage. The incident prompted investigations into crowd control measures, security protocols, and the overall safety preparedness of the event.
Ten people died at Astroworld in 2021. The cause of death of all ten victims was compression asphyxia.
Following the 2021 Astroworld tragedy, thousands of lawsuits were filed by the injured victims and the families of the deceased. Among the defendants were Live Nation, Travis Scott, Drake, Apple, Epic Records, Front Gate Ticketing Solutions, and Cactus Jack Enterprises.
On June 29, 2023, a Harris County grand jury failed to indict Travis Scott on any criminal charges connected to the concert, instead finding that “no single individual was criminally responsible” for the deaths or injuries.
As of May 2024, nine out of ten wrongful death lawsuits have been settled, including one that was scheduled to go to trial. Terms of the settlements are confidential.
